Dental phobia is defined as a strong fear of the dentist. People who experience dental phobia generally avoid the dentist at all costs. Despite improvements in pain management, fear of the dentist has remained stable over the past 50 years. In fact, the Academy of General Dentistry estimates that 40 million Americans currently experience some degree of dental phobia.
At our Verona dental office, we understand dental fear and offer several safe and effective solutions. One of them, hypnosis, is now recognized as an appropriate technique in helping people overcome dental phobia. Through hypnosis, Dr. Sandler can help reduce anxiety and encourage a state of prolonged relaxation.
In dentistry, we use hypnosis to:
* Reduce stress
* Prevent gagging
* Alter the patient's perception of time during longer procedures
* Reduce or eliminate anxiety, tension, fear of pain, and discomfort
* Modify unwanted habits such as clenching or grinding
* Help patients get accustomed to dentures, nightguards, and retainers
* Improve general oral hygiene
Hypnosis has also been found useful when working with smoking reduction, weight loss, and other problems.
Dr. Sandler practices a "guided meditation" method of hypnosis. With this approach, Dr. Sandler functions as an agent or teacher who aids you in helping yourself. A person cannot be hypnotized against his will. During hypnosis, you will not lose consciousness. You will be aware at all times and will hear and remember everything that happens during the session. If you wish to terminate the hypnotic state for any reason, just open your eyes. You will not be in a "coma"; you will be able to awaken at any time.
