A crown, also called a cap, completely covers a tooth and restores function and beauty. Dr. Sandler places crowns when a tooth has extensive damage that can't be repaired by a simple filling. At our Verona dental office, we use all-porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and precious metal crowns.
The entire crown procedure takes about 2 to 3 visits. First, we repair the damaged tooth and take an impression. Dr. Sandler sends the impression to our dental laboratory, where your custom crown is created. While we're waiting on your crown to arrive, Dr. Sandler will provide you with a temporary restoration that will blend with your smile. At a second visit, he will permanently bond the new crown to your natural tooth.
All-porcelain crowns can be used to enhance the appearance of front teeth when veneers are not an option. For back teeth, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or precious metal crowns are best, because they're able to withstand tremendous biting forces. On average, a crown's minimum life span is around 10 years; however, with proper oral hygiene and care, a crown can last a lifetime.
